Understanding the Food Security Crisis from a G-77 Perspective

Author: I Gusti Agung Wesaka Puja

Date of Publication: 2008-07-01

Summary:

As we are all aware, the world is experiencing an alarming predicament in the form of food and energy crises. It is rather unfortunate and somewhat paradoxical that these crises should happen just as economic growth is soaring in some parts of the world. The food and energy crises stem from the conjunction of multifaceted factors, among them climate change, high volatility of prices, and unfavorable trade policies. Indeed, we must consider the impact that both these crises will have on the global economy, and their possible effects on political and social stability. These crises may hamper efforts on the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals.
